Petrified Wood Hunting |
| All it takes to begin the process of petrification is three raw ingredients: wood, water and mud. Petrification of the wood found on our Wilson Ranch began during the Triassic Period when the primitive trees such as conifers fell to the ground and into the waterways, beginning their journey through time. The logs were swept and tumbled downstream with sediment and other debris. The streams traveled through a plain of lakes and swamps where the wood, sediment and debris were deposited along the way. Hundreds feet of sediment was deposited in the plain by the rivers that originated from mountain ranges nearby. As the logs were deposited in the plains they were buried with mud and debris, beginning a petrification process. The mud that covered the logs likely contained a volcanic ash, a key ingredient in the petrification process. When the volcanic ash began to decompose it allowed chemicals to be released into the water and mud. As the water seeped into the wood the chemicals from the volcanic ash reacted with the wood and formed into petrified wood. Overtime, the wood became encased in the over millions of years, turning the wood into stone. On our Wlson Ranch you are welcome keep wood you fnd that can be carried in one hand. Large pieces are not included in the hunt. Take up to 100# of wood per day. We can UPS the wood to your location or you can carry it away. |
